The No. 54 Palm pattern is marbled with metallic gold, nougat, brown, dark grey, black, and oxblood red, on black paper.
Palm is a modern pattern, dating from the 20th century, that requires four different combs and is demanding to make. A Turkish base (the oldest European marbling pattern, dating back to the 15th century) is made by tapping colours from a brush onto the marbling bath, creating a random, spotted pattern. A comb is then drawn twice vertically, in opposite directions, through the Turkish base, then likewise horizontally. Lastly, a comb is drawn vertically in lines, creating a pattern resembling palm fronds.
Palm is also called Fern, Fougère, and Farn.
